Joint Statements from STGC\KC OBA Presidents .... Monday April 28 '08

JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE OLD BOYS ASSOCIATIONS OF ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE & KINGSTON COLLEGE
APRIL 26,2008

The relationship between St. George’s College and Kingston College has been a longstanding affair. The relationship started when the late Bishop Percival Gibson set foot on the campus of St. George’s College as a student in the early 1900 and the subsequent founding of Kingston College in 1925.

This relationship was further cemented in 1966 with the playing of the first Roper Cup Football Tournament, between St. George’s College and Kingston College old and present boys in honour of the late Fr. Jack Roper who died at a very young age. Except for maybe two occasions, one being last year, this annual football tournament takes place like clockwork in an atmosphere of friendly rivalry and it signifies the start of the Manning Cup season.

It is with great shock and horror that we, the members of the Old Boys Associations of both schools learned of the news of the conflict that has taken place between students of both St. George’s College and Kingston College.According to newspaper reports, this conflict has spread to involve other notable high schools in the Corporate Area.

We the members of both Associations believe that our high schools should be a place of caring and nurturing, where young minds are fashioned and moulded, so that these precious young people can take their places as respectable and productive citizens of this land, Jamaica, the country that we all love dearly.

These great schools should never exist in an environment of conflict. To this end, we the members of the Association have committed to redouble our efforts, in conjunction with the school administrators, to arrest and eliminate the scourge of this cancer of violence that has taken over our schools and society.

We are resolute that the students of our beloved schools will enjoy safe passage in their environs and the best possible journey to a successful adulthood. We are responsible to this and future generations.

Signed

Courtney O. Currie & Kenneth daCosta

StGC/KC Students Problems ....Courtney Currie Friday April 25 '08

It came to my attention yesterday via the Principal, Mrs. Margaret Campbell that there has been an altercation between students of both schools over an Alpha girl. The end results of this altercation is a St. George's College student being stabbed. Luckily, the wound was not fatal.
I have since made contact with the President of the Kingston College Old Boys Association about a joint address to both student bodies, since the relationship that exist between both schools is unique in this country, and one in which we have and will do to preserve. I have also communicated this request to the Principal Mrs. Margaret Campbell.
I am hoping that the address will happen sometime early next week.

2008 Golf Tournament / Prize Giving /Old Boys Lyme ....Michael Chuck Monday April 21 '08

St. George’s College Old Boys Association 13th Annual Golf Tournament which was held on April 12 2008 at the Constant Spring Golf Club was a successful one. We had 98 participants this year, which is very good for tournaments in these times

In the open Peter Chin and Telroy Morgan playing off a combined handicap of 4 netted 60.75 for first place, Paul Seaton and Nigel Davy playing off a combined handicap of 6.75 netted 61 for second place, and Guyan Arscot and Fabian Campbell playing off a combined handicap of 5.75 netted 61.25 finished third.

In the closed section for St. George’s College only Rodger Braham and Bruce Lyn playing off a combined handicap of 5.5 netted 60.5 for first place, Tony Wong and Paul Bitter playing off a combined handicap of 5.75 netted 61.25 for second and Wayne Chang and Wayne Wray playing off a combined handicap of 11.75 netted 65.25 finished third, Peter Bitter and Roy LynShue playing of a combined handicap of 8 netted 66 for fourth place, Dennis Charley and Arthur Lowe playing off a combined handicap of 11 netted 66 for fifth place, Norman Wright and Michael King playing of a combined handicap of 10.75 netted 68.25 for sixth place, Basil Lue and Danny Chin playing of a combined handicap netted 69 for seventh place and Hubie Chin and Sydney Lowrie playing of a combined handicap of 12 netted 72 for eighth place.

The Challenge Trophy section for alumni contested by St.G.C, KC, Campion, Alpha, Cornwall College, St. Mary High, Wolmers, York Castle, JC, Glenmuir, Munroe, Clarendon College, Excelsior, Calabar, and Hillel ended in a very exciting finish. Bruce Lyn and Roger Braham representing St. Georges College paired against Peter Chin and Telroy Morgan representing Munroe College, both pairs of scores were tied up after the 17th hole, but Bruce made a tremendous second shot from the right side on the 18th (practice tee side) to stick up the pin. St. G. C birded and Munroe parred. At the end of play St.G.C stood standing with a net score of 60.5. They won the challenge, second was Munroe College with a net score of 60.75 third was Holmwood represented by Paul Seaton and Nigel Davy with a net score of 61.

As usual our cocktail prize giving was hilarious, with Paul Bitter as the M.C. We had a great turn out of St.G.C old boys and their friends. Special mention must be made of the "Graduating Class of 1993" who turned out in their numbers.

The rains stayed away this year thank God. We would like to send out special thanks to our main sponsor First Global. Special thanks to Mr. Herman Athias for donating the main prize of a computer system, which will be donated to the winning school St.G.C by the winners Bruce Lyn and Rodger Braham. Many thanks also to the manager of Constant Spring Golf Club, our own Michael King. Thanks also to the hole sponsors and other prize sponsors and last but not least our supporters who all made this a successful tournament
